BROOKLYN, NEW YORK
and the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights Area
Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights are
bordered to the west by the water of the Narrows.
This unique location gives
residents a grandstand seat to beautiful views. Naturally, during summer and spring,
graceful sailboats and sporty speedboats are a regular sight as they race along. In fall
and winter, lush foliage turns to brilliant shades and a crisp sea breeze brings color to
your face. The drive along the Belt Parkway, running parallel to lovely Shore Road on one
side and the Narrows on the other, offers picturesque scenes of freighters and ocean
liners anchored in the waters. In the evening, the lights of Staten Island and the
Manhattan skyline make a wonderful sight. On the Belt, you'll pass under the world's
longest suspension bridge the Verranzo-Narrows, rooted in 756,000 cubic yards of concrete.
All this within a few minutes' walk, jog or bike ride from any where in our community.
Located on the western fringe of Brooklyn, Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights are each a short train trip to lower Manhattan and the Wall Street area. Many residents welcome the close proximity to Manhattan while being able to enjoy the benefits of a friendly and secure place to live. More and more this community and surrounding neighborhoods are being considered "Manhattan extensions.
Over the years, Brooklyn has seen some major social and physical changes, but Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights has remained stable and quietly appealing. Our largely middle-class community has sustained a peaceful atmosphere and is a decidedly soothing presence in Brooklyn. According to a New York magazine article,
"Residents here are known to take great stock in family, church, and neighborhood; it is not unusual to see generations of the same family living across the street from one another in tidy brick homes so typical of the area..."
This article went on to name our
community as one of the safest neighborhoods in all of New York City, which may be due in
large part to our volunteer citizen patrol and the overall pride taken in the reputation
we have made for ourselves. Development here is commercially thriving. Major streets and
avenues are line with restaurants, antique shops and specialty stores. Shopping malls are
located in downtown Brooklyn, Staten Island, and nearby Long Island and New Jersey.
Fine dining and entertainment abound as well. Movie theaters are plentiful and the Brooklyn Academy of Music offers a full schedule of important concerts, dance and stage plays from September through June. Of course, a short trip to Manhattan puts an endless variety of things to do right at your feet.
Our public schools are among the highest ranked in all of Brooklyn in reading and math proficiency, each individual school rating well above grade level. This is a good reflection of their overall performance.
Aside from wide open spaces for running, and parks for picnicking and strolling, there are numerous other recreational facilities. The landfill that occupies the waterfront on the Narrows has outdoor tennis, handball, and basketball courts, tracks and fields. Dyker Beach Park offers fields for football, baseball and lacrosse, and Dyker Beach Golf Course stands among the city's best. Several clean public and private beaches are a short drive away. Some community organizations include American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, and the Masonic Order.
